Painters cover miles on artistic tiles
Collaborative work by over 100 artists will be displayed at Kala Ghoda Passersby on M G Road can catch city artist Bharati Kapadia and Spanish photo artist Oscar Villegas putting up a collage of tiles created by over 100 artists from across the world. Titled the Tile Project, Destination: The World, it''s been commissioned by the Bostonbased Transcultural Exchange, which organises interactive international art projects every year. 21 similar works will be installed in various parts of the world. "It''s globalisation at its best. We have a contact artist in each of the 21 cities and he or she is free to design the form in which the tiles will be united," says Mary Sherman, director, Trans-Cultural Exchange, from Boston. Bharati got in touch with the Kala Ghoda Association to select a location for the work, and they all zeroed in on the Khyber building. The tiles represent myriad techniques and artistic expressions in ceramic, metal, glass and stone. Some are carved, some are textured, some are handpainted, and others have photographic images. The mural will be round. "It depicts the global nature of this project," says Bharati. malati.kallapur@timesgroup.com
